“Climate change is not a far-off problem. It is happening now and is having very real consequences on people’s lives. Climate change is disrupting national economies, costing us dearly today and even more tomorrow. But there is a growing recognition that affordable, scalable solutions are available now that will enable us all to leapfrog to cleaner, more resilient economies.” – From the Home Page of UN Climate Summit 2014, Catalyzing Action
How can we make this change happen? One affordable, scalable solution, which is currently available, is collaborative multi-stakeholder process. Done well, multi-stakeholder facilitation and change process can play a key role in mobilizing organizations and sectors at various scales to find a direct pathway to reduce GHG emissions and make a rapid transition toward a more resilient, sustainable and low carbon economy.
The Climate Change Facilitation Project (CCFP) was launched September 24, 2014 at Climate Week NYC, timed with the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit 2014. Those of you who know the project will note the name change: “Climate Change” Facilitation Project (CCFP) instead of the previous name “Emissions Reduction” Facilitation Project (ERFP).
The priorities of the project remain the same. Moving forward, the new name will better reflect how action for climate change mitigation can serve a range of goals (i.e. economic, social, environmental). As well, the new name acknowledges the importance of global action on adaptation to climate change, and how achieving emissions reductions is at the same time, an opportunity to strengthen the resilience of communities and economies.
The high level purpose of CCFP is to support climate action and build capacity in effective Multi-Stakeholder Facilitation and Change Process toward achieving ambitious emissions reduction targets for 2020 and 2030, sufficient to keep climate change within the 2° Celsius limit.
More specifically, CCFP will:
- Offer comprehensive and effective facilitation and training services for strengthening climate action.
- Build and offer a program of services and resources for strengthening the capacity of key organizations and institutions in collaborative assessment, stakeholder engagement, facilitative leadership, and for mobilizing for the needed change.
- Identify potential partners and sponsors to continue testing and refining multi-stakeholder approaches for achieving the needed emissions reductions with co-benefits for resilient economies in a range of sectors at various scales.
- Promote a discussion / build awareness on ways that multi-stakeholder facilitation process and tools could support the global transition to a low emissions and resilient, sustainable economy.
